Day 1 of our flying trip to the Kimberley. The route took us from Jandakot airport in Perth via Meekatharra YMEK for fuel and on to Newman (Martu country) for an overnight stop. This route mostly follows the Great Northern Hwy and passes over remote desert country including the Little Sandy Desert.
Inflight entertainment included counting the trailers of road trains on the highway, watching the wheatbelt turn to desert, seeing various cattle stations and gold mines and playing a game of who could spot remote airstrips first! All to the soundtrack of aircraft engine noise and Melbourne Centre radio chatter.
Song of the day was Do The Stomp by the Snowdroppers played through the Bose A20 headset.
We organised a transfer from the airport in Newman with Mia Mia Newman. Probably the nicest accommodation in town! There is breakfast, lunch and dinnner on offer, comfortable beds and rooms, a guest laundry, wifi and pleasant grounds! The reception staff and manager were very helpful in picking us up. We will definitely be staying here again.
Meekatharra airstrip has a 24hr AVGAS bowser as does Newman. Obviously always check the ERSA and it's worth calling ahead to ensure you won't be caught out. Bathroom at Meekatharra is very clean and is unlocked each time we've been there. There is a number to call on the gate from the airside for land side access.
The food offered at Mia Mia gets a tick of approval from two very hungry pilots!
A nice outdoor area to be enjoyed at the Mia Mia accommodation when the nights aren't so cold! Bring layers!
